In Prekindergarten, children are developing their "concepts of print" meaning that they are learning about how books work. They are learning to identify the front cover and the back of a book, how to turn the pages one at a time, to sustain their attention and read cover to cover. In Prekindergarten, children learn to read the "3 or 4-year old way" which means reading the pictures. They should be able to discern words on a page versus the pictures and understand that the words go with the pictures. Here the staff member is pointing to a period at the end of sentence to see if this student knows what it is and what it does. This information helps Mrs. Davis when planning for Shared Reading and this information is collected for each child. I will be able to share this information with families during our November Conferences!
